The rough and ready mining centre of Midelt works well as base for excursions, to the abandoned mines of Ahouli in a defile of the Oued Moulouya, or an off-road trip to the Cirque de Jaffar, a natural amphitheatre in the side of Jbel Ayyachi, paramount peak of the region . For many it’s a handy overnight stop about halfway between the imperial cities and the Tafilalet. Despite high unemployment, the town has a calm, friendly atmosphere and a souk on Sunday.
