Berkane is a bustling modern agricultural centre with little of historical or cultural interest. It is, however, a convenient base for excursions to the nearby mountains and there is a comfortable hotel with a good restaurant. A sharp contrast exists between the leafy, well-to-do end of town close to the administrative and military buildings on the Oujda Road, and the busy crowded dusty streets which characterize the rest. Most facilities are on the main Boulevard Mohammed V, the Nador to Oujda main road. At the western end of this road, before the bridge over the oued, is a large open space with the main mosque, several cafés and a large weekly market each Tuesday. The town is also a main centre for the Boutchitchiya soufi brotherhood.
The CTM offices are located midway along Blvd Mohammed V next to the Café des Jardins. There is a bus to Oujda and one to Fès/Casablanca from here. Most other bus services depart from Blvd Moulay Youssef opposite Café des Jardins. From here there are hourly departures for Ahfir and Oujda. Buses for Nador stop to pick up every hour on the hour (roughly) by the Grand Mosque. There is normally only 1 bus for Saïdia at 1400 departing from the same place as the taxis.
Taxi
Grands taxis for Nador, Taforalt, El Aioun and Taourirt leave from the parking space under the tall trees by the Grand Mosque. For Saïdia, the taxis leave from the Saïdia road at the opposite end of town (bear left at the roundabout with the emblem in the middle). All other grands taxis depart from the main bus stop in Blvd Moulay Youssef.
