Rissani, 22 km south of Erfoud and birthplace of the Alaouite Dynasty, is a sprawling modern village close to the site of the ruined town of Sijilmassa. It has a 17th-century ksar which houses most of the population, and the main street has a bank and a few cafés. If you are feeling energetic and have your own transport you may want to explore the ksar on a heritage trail, the circuit touristique.

Getting There
Although there is a new gare routière, before the ceremonial arch as you come into town from the north, lots of buses still come into the main square, as do the Mercedes minivans and grands taxis for Merzouga. There is a CTM bus (T035-575103), leaving for Er Rachidia and Meknès every evening, plus occasional grands taxis across to places on the Zagora to Ouazarzate road.
