Erfoud is a southern Moroccan garrison town, founded by the French in the 1930s to administer their desert territories. The modern centre of the Tafilalet region, it makes an excellent base for exploring the valley and nearby desert areas. The small town of Rissani and its ksar and the dunes of Erg Chebbi are close by, though to see the latter at their best you’re probably best continuing to Merzouga. Lovers of dates may try to coincide with the annual date festival held in October.
Erfoud is a small place, easily explored on foot. You will probably want to visit the ksar at Rissani, however, which is easily accessible by grand taxi. A number of other ksar are a few kilometres outside the main settlement. The Erg Chebbi dunes can be reached by 4WD excursion, with hotels like the Salam and the Tafilalet in Erfoud offering the trip. Otherwise, try to join up with some people with a car. There are grands taxis and minivans in the early morning between Merzouga and Rissani, leaving from the main square of Rissani near the Ziz petrol pump.
Erfoud is easily accessible from the Dadès Valley further west. You can travel by bus from Tinghir to Tinejad, changing there for Erfoud (two hours). Er Rachidia to Erfoud is 1½ hours. There is also a daily bus from Fès (11 hours).
Erfoud
There are buses each day to Er Rachidia and on to Meknès. Transport onwards to Rissani is by bus, grand taxi, or by a hired 4WD.
Post office and Banque Populaire are located in the town centre on the Av Moulay Ismail/Av Mohammed V junction. Nearby are the Crédit agricole, a pharmacy and doctor. There is a BMCE ATM next to the Total garage on the east side of the main drag, just before the Hotel Tafilalet, as you go north.
