Gorge to gorge

Though rough, the 42 km west to Msemrir from Tamtatouchte, rising to 2800 m, is popular with the 4WD brigade. It can be done in five hours. This journey is best undertaken in a good 4WD vehicle with reliable local driver. Ensure that tyre pressure is higher than normal, as tracks are very stony, and that you have a full petrol tank. Find out about the condition of the piste before departure. This route is best undertaken between May and September. At other times of year, potential flash floods make it dangerous. It is probably best to do this route starting at the Todra Gorge so you do the most difficult pass, the one after Tamtatouche, 2639 m, first. At Msemrir, a popular base village for treks, there are a couple of simple places to stay, including the Auberge el Ouarda and the Auberge Agdal.
