Morocco’s surfing centre, Taghazoute (19 km north of Agadir) was once a sleepy, hippy village. Today, it is waking up to making money out of its fame, and it could well eventually become a mainstream holiday town. For the moment, although new hotel developments are springing up, it remains a relaxing place and the beach is superb. Freecamping, replaced by apartments, is now a thing of the past but the place retains a laid back air and you don’t have to go far to get more great surfing away from the crowds. To get there, catch bus No 12 or 14 from Place Salam in Agadir.
The best surfing, and therefore Taghazoute’s high season, is from late autumn to spring when the Atlantic winds work their magic. Rocky reefs, sandy beaches and the Atlantic swell combine here for some fantastic surfing conditions. Popular spots Anchors, Killers and Mysteries are all within walking distance. However they can be crowded and it’s worth taking a bus from the square to Aourir to the south or to Boilers and Tamri Plage to the north. Tickets are cheap and the buses run every 30 minutes. A car opens up other seldom-surfed possibilities along the N1. For beginners, Taghazoute is a good place to learn – see listings on page for details. Note that here can be problems in the area with sewage.
