Allahabad

The narrow spit of land at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, normally an almost deserted river beach of fine sand, becomes home for two weeks once every 12 years to the Kumbh Mela, when more than 70 million pilgrims converge to bathe in the holy waters. Allahabad has grown around this spot and is today a rapidly expanding commercial and administrative city. It is particularly sacred for Hindus because it is at the confluence of three rivers, the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythological underground Saraswati. For the Muslims and the British too, this became a strategically vital centre; they have left their imprint on the landmarks of the city, making it an interesting city to wander around, particularly the Civil Lines area to the north.
