Rajasthan's famous blue city
In the middle of Jodhpur's chaotic, noisy alleyways, a giant is sleeping, encased in his rocky fortress. Mehenragarh Fort is truly magical, a golden beast that doesn't let you forget its grand past and its role in defeating the Jaipur, Bikaner and Mughal armies. From its walls, you can also catch one of the best views in India - baby-blue Brahmin houses speckle the city like an Impressionist painting, as serene as the streets below are cacophonous.
Most travelers base themselves in the Old City, an atmospheric jumble of narrow lanes, smoky food stands, slow-moving cows, noisy rickshaws, and store upon store selling everything you'd ever want to take home as a souvenir. You could literally spend weeks here, untangling everything that Jodhpur has to offer.
