Udaipur

This city is no mirage.

Udaipur has been called the most romantic city in India. Its pink, cream, and grey palaces bring a soft glow to the air at dusk and beg you to take a walk along the lakeshores. A part of the western state of Rajasthan, Udaipur's architecture was an influence on the designer of the Taj Mahal. You will find that there is plenty to celebrate in India, but one of the most elaborate and enjoyable festivals is the "Festival of Colors," which takes place on the two-day period called "Holi." Beginning in late February or early March, Holi has traditionally been a women's festival celebrating the Hindu goddess Parvati, but has become purely a man's day, perhaps due to safety reasons. The streets are full of rowdy men, music, white outfits, and paint throwing. If you get out to see a Bollywood film, this celebration comes up quite a bit, so watch for it. Udaipur is easily accessible by rail and bus, even air. The architecture is worth the visit; one of the most visited sites is the City Palace, originally built by Maharana Udai Singh of the Sisodia Rajput clan, which has a unique blend of medieval Chinese and European architecture. City Palace has a museum testifying to the royal history of Udaipur and all of the maharaji who ruled from inside its walls.
