Tumbes, about 141 km north of Talara, and 265 km north of Piura, is the most northerly of Perus provincial capitals. It is not the most beautiful, but it does have some interesting historic wooden buildings in the centre. Tumbes is also a garrison town, so watch where you point your camera. Mosquito repellent is a must for the Tumbes area.
