The tourism department has developed an old rubber plantation set around the Vembanad Lake into a bird sanctuary (1000-1800.) A path goes through the swamp to the main bird nesting area. Pathiramanal (’midnight sands’) Island in the middle of the lake can be reached by boat. The best season for birdlife is June to August; try to visit early in the morning.
