Situated northeast of Belur, Chikmagalur means younger daughter’s town and according to legend it was the dowry for the younger daughter of a local chieftain. In addition to the Hoysala-style Kodandarama Temple there are mosques, the moated fort and the St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Cathedral. The town is at the centre of one of India’s major coffee growing areas. Coffee was first grown in the Baba Budan Hills, just to the north, in 1670. The Central Coffee Research Institute was set up in 1925.
