Literally meaning the ‘golden valley’ gets its name from the yellow crocus blooms that carpet the valley each spring. At an altitude of 2740 m, it’s the last major town in Kashmir before the Zoji La pass – the gateway to Ladakh. The area is highly regarded for its trekking and fishing; trout were introduced here by the British in the 19th century. Accommodation is available through JK TDC in the summer months.
