Dharamsala

A little slice of Tibet in India

When the Dalai Lama fleed Tibet during the Chinese occupation of Tibet, he walked through the Himalayas and ended up here, and this is where he has been living in exile ever since. Many of his followers eventually settled here as well; as such, you're more likely to snack on momos than on parathas. Dharamsala is a Hindi word that means 'spiritual dwelling,' and appropriately there are many opportunities to learn, or simply experience, reiki and various types of massage. Though the town is one of the most tranquil you'll ever see in India, the political atmosphere is sometimes charged. Tibetans are divided on how to negotiate with China, and Dharamsala is one of the hotbeds of political furor. Depending on the situation in Tibet, you may encounter protests and hunger strikes.

As if the Dalai Lama and Tibetan community weren't a big enough draw, the scenery is utterly spectacular. Take a walk through the mountains and breathe in some cool, crisp air - you'll miss it once you get back to the dusty lowlands of India.
