Background
The town took the name Orebić, after a family of local sea captains, during the 16th century; before this date it had been known as Trstenica. As part of the Republic of Dubrovnik it was governed by a local rector and had very restricted dealings with neighbouring Korčula, which was at that time under Venice.
The town’s greatest period of prosperity began in 1865, when locals founded their own shipping company, Associazione Marittima di Sabioncello (AMS). It had 33 impressive wooden sailing ships (each with a Biblical name from the Old Testament) and covered sea routes all the way to North America. However, it was a short-lived affair; it closed down in 1887, when steamers began replacing wind-driven ships.
Today, thanks to its pleasant climate and south-facing beaches, Orebić lives primarily from tourism. It makes a cheap alternative to the more upmarket resort of Korčula Town, with which it is connected by a frequent ferry service. Are you a business owner?
