Dubrovnik

Breathtakingly beautiful coastline and majestic architecture from Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance

Backed by rugged limestone mountains and jutting out into the Adriatic Sea, Dubrovnik is one of the world’s finest and best-preserved fortified cities. Its gargantuan walls and medieval fortress towers enclose the historic centre, filled with terracotta-roof town houses and monuments such as the 15th-century Rector’s Palace, two monasteries with cloistered gardens and several fine baroque churches with copper domes. The old town is traversed by the main pedestrian promenade, Placa, paved with glistening white limestone and lined with open-air cafés and small boutiques. In 1979, the city became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tourism has a long history here and the museums, churches, hotels and restaurants are all well geared to foreign visitors – prices are also geared to foreigners, and in Dubrovnik you should expect to pay almost double what you would anywhere else in Croatia. Today, after the lull caused by the war, Dubrovnik is once again considered one of Europe’s most exclusive destinations. Cruise ships en route from Venice to the Greek islands stop here (in high season up to nine per day, which can be a bit much), several of the country’s plushest and most expensive hotels can be found, and it’s also a major base for charter companies hiring out yachts in South Dalmatia.

I fell in love with this medieval meets fairytale-like city as soon as I entered the Gate of Pila. The unique Buza Bar (hole in the wall) is a must visit - I spent days at this bar, located at the edge of the city wall cliff, sipping on Croatian wine whilst watching the boats sail by into the Adriatic Sea. Bliss.
