Cute village on Krk island
Thanks to its spectacular beach, Baška is the oldest and best-known resort on the island. What was once a compact little fishing village now straggles almost 3 km along the coast, due to the restaurants, apartment blocks and the vast Hotel Corinthia complex, which have sprung up over the last 30 years. Behind town is a fertile plain of cultivated fields, and behind that a band of rugged limestone hills.
On the cultural front, the Romanesque Crkva Sv Lucije (Church of St Lucy) (Jul-Aug daily 0900-1100, 1700-2200, Sep-Jun daily 1600-2000) is 2 km inland in the tiny village of Jurandvor. It was here that the renowned Bašćanska Ploča (Baška Tablet) was discovered, set in the church floor, in 1851. This white limestone slab, 2 m wide and 1 m high, was engraved with 13 lines (about 100 words) in Glagolitic characters some time in the late 11th century. It records, in Old Slavonic language, the donation of land (probably the site the church is built on) from the early Croatian King, Zvonimir, to the local parish. Although it is not the oldest surviving Glagolitic text, it is regarded as the most important due to its graphic style, language and historic content. In 1934, despite strong resistance from the people of Jurandvor, who tried to hide the slab in the village school, the original was transferred to Zagreb, where it can now be seen in the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences. What you will see in the church here is a replica.
