With four elegant bell towers lining the crest of a narrow peninsula, viewed from the sea the night-time silhouette of Rab Town is poetically compared to a giant sailing boat with four slender masts. The old town is compact and well preserved, and can be divided into two parts: the medieval stone cottages of Kaldanac – on the tip of the peninsula, where the early Roman settlement was located – and Varoš, which takes up the land end of the peninsula and is made of narrow paved streets lined with elegant 15th- to 17th-century Gothic and Renaissance buildings, many with ornate balconies, finely carved windows and doorways topped with family coats of arms. Through summer, the old town sees a constant influx of visitors.
