Beli stands on a hill, 130 m above a tiny harbour and pleasant pebble beach, on the northeast coast. Isolated and semi-abandoned with a population of 35, this cluster of old stone cottages is popular with hikers and nature lovers, who use it as a base for exploring the surrounding forests of the Tramuntane.
Almost 200 bird species are found on Cres, of which 90 breed here, making the island one of the richest ornithological areas on the Adriatic. The Kruna Reserve, between Beli and Merag, protects birds of prey such as the golden eagle, short-toed eagle, peregrine, honey buzzard and griffon vulture. Besides birds of prey, other species such as the eagle owl reside here. Visits to the ornithological reserve are restricted, but those interested in birdwatching can contact the Eco-Centar Caput Insulae for guided tours in small groups.
