This is Croatia’s longest-standing tourist resort with its old-fashioned hotels and an ageing clientele – through winter and spring at least half the guests are over 60. The seafront hotels, built largely in Viennese Secessionist style, offer neat gardens and sunny terraces where you can drink coffee and watch the world go by during the day, and through summer dinner is also served outside, often accompanied by live music. Several have sophisticated Wellness Centres.
Opatija owes much of its success to its wonderful microclimate, recommended for convalescence and people suffering from stress. Mount Učka shelters the coast from the cold bura wind, so that winters are mild and summers never unreasonably hot.
