Overlooking the Kvarner Gulf, Rijeka is Croatia’s largest port, with a shipyard, massive dry dock facilities, refineries and other heavy industries. Architecturally, the centre is remarkably similar to Trieste in Italy, with a grid of grandiose 18th-century Austro- Hungarian buildings on the seafront, and a sprawling suburb of high-rise apartment blocks from the 1960s. The main public meeting place is the Korzo, a pedestrian street a couple of blocks back from the port, lined with shops and open-air cafés. There are few memorable sights here, other than the lovely hilltop castle and pilgrimage church of Trsat, and the city has only four hotels, as most visitors to the area stay in the nearby seaside resort of Opatija. Rijeka receives national television coverage each year for the staging of Croatia’s largest Carnival.
