The medieval hill town of Buje makes a pleasant outing for its sleepy cobbled streets, romantic old buildings and stunning views over the surrounding countryside, coupled with a number of informal eateries serving locally produced food and wine. Formerly referred to as the ‘Watchtower of Istria’ due to its elevated position overlooking two important transit routes – situated where the road from Pula to Trieste intersects with that from Umag to Buzet – it was founded by the Romans as Bullea. The historic centre, protected by defensive walls and a series of towers – of which two remain, one square, the other pentagonal – date from the period spent under Venice (1412-1797).
