Pula

Pula is something of an enigma. Here magnificent ancient Roman ruins stand side by side with a declining industrial port, in a city that is Istria’s administrative and economic centre. Somewhat surprisingly, it’s also one of the top places in Croatia for small, high-class, family-run hotels and chic seafood restaurants serving beautifully presented creative cuisine. With two well-equipped marinas, one directly in front of the city centre and the other at Veruda, it’s a popular destination for yachters, as well as sightseers who come to visit the monumental first-century Roman amphi- theatre and the nearby Brijuni National Park, and holidaymakers on package deals, who normally sleep in the large seaside hotels south of the centre at Verudela and Medulin.
