Backed by a low-lying, fertile plain planted with vineyards and olive groves, Poreč is Istria’s most-visited seaside resort. The old town itself is quite tiny, a cluster of Venetian-style terracotta-roofed houses lying compact on a small peninsula, though the interior of its main attraction, the sixth-century Euphrasius Basilica, is decorated with golden Byzantine mosaics so stunning to have earned it a place on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Café life centres on the seafront promenade overlooking the harbour, filled with fishing boats and water taxis, which shuttle holidaymakers back and forth to beaches on the nearby islet of Sv Nikola (St Nicholas). South of the centre, Plava Laguna and Zelena Laguna make up a 6-km stretch of modern hotel complexes, cleverly hidden by landscaping and dense pinewoods.
