Background
Founded by the Hapsburgs in 1579 as a military base, for some time Karlovac marked the southern border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As a defence post against Ottoman expansion, the settlement was built to a sturdy Renaissance plan based on a six-point star with bastions and a moat, which was filled with water from the nearby rivers, the Korana and the Kupa. During the late 17th century, as the Turks were pushed further south and the settlement no longer served as a military base, it developed into a provincial town filled with baroque architecture.Bus
