While Gornji Grad is made up of higgledy-piggledy cobbled streets which evolved spontaneously over the centuries, Donji Grad (Lower Town) was built on a formal grid during the late 19th century. The urban plan was drawn up by Milan Lenuci, who proposed a succession of adjoining squares with central gardens, laid out to form a ‘U’, now known as Lenuci’s Green Horseshoe.
