Makarska combines the qualities of an old-fashioned Dalmatian port and a modern- day tourist resort. The setting is impressive: a palm-lined seafront promenade is built around a large cove, protected from the open sea by a wooded peninsula to the southwest, and sheltered from the cold bura wind by the craggy limestone heights of Mount Biokovo to the northeast. Through summer it makes a perfect base for holidaying on the beaches of the so-called Makarska Rivijera, while keen walkers are drawn to the rugged landscapes and rural villages of Biokovo Nature Park during spring and autumn. Makarska is popular with SAGA – the only travel agency that continued operating in Croatia through the 1990s – but come summer it’s overrun with young visitors and families from all over Europe, who are drawn by its pleasant beaches, vibrant nightlife and reasonably priced accommodation.
