Just 9 km inland from Split, the sleepy village of Klis nestles on the south-facing slopes between the mountains of Kozjak (779 m) and Mosor (1339 m). Historically it’s known for its medieval hilltop fortress, once the site of many gruelling battles; today it is an all-but-abandoned monument offering romantic views over the sea at sunset. Locally, Klis is also esteemed for its down-to-earth restaurants serving janjetina – you can’t miss them, each one has a whole lamb turning on a spit by the roadside.
