Split

Split is Croatia’s second largest city, after Zagreb, and the main point of arrival for visitors to Dalmatia. Unfortunately, in the past Split was regarded as a transit centre rather than a destination in itself, and consequently suffers from a dearth of good hotels and restaurants. However, if you do decide to stay, you’ll undoubtedly be impressed by the extraordinary mix of the old and the new: magnificent ancient buildings, romantic cobbled back streets, lively open-air seaside cafés and a vibrant nightlife.

Outside the historic centre there are some lovely coastal paths, each side of town, so you can explore the whole place on foot. A 15-minute walk from the centre rises Marjan Hill – a nature reserve planted with pine forests, palms, agaves and cacti – offering a wonderful panorama over the city rooftops, the sea and the surrounding islands. You’ll find a number of well-equipped marinas, where countless charter companies hire out yachts for those who wish to explore the region in the best way possible, by sailing boat.
