Bol travel guide

Background

Traces of villae rusticae and early Christian sarcophagi show that there was some sort of community here back in Roman times. In fact, Bol claims to be the oldest settlement on the island, though whatever used to stand here was destroyed during a Saracen raid in the ninth century.

About 600 years later, Dominican monks set up a monastery on the small promontory overlooking the sea, and during the 17th century, as the islanders began to move down from the interior and build settlements along the coast, the present- day village came into being.

For centuries the people of Bol lived from farming, winemaking and fishing, then in 1963, tourism began. During the 1970s, a string of large hotels were built along the seaside promenade leading from the village to the beach, and Bol soon established itself as one of the country’s top resorts. Today it remains a popular destination for package tours; countless agencies organize day trips to and from Bol, and along the waterfront you’ll see more signs in German, English, Polish and Czech than Croatian.

Buses from Bol to Supetar are scheduled to coincide with the ferries (50 mins).

Ferry

Jadrolinija (no Bol office, for information contact Split office, T021-338333) run a daily catamaran service from Jelsa on the island of Hvar to Split, calling at Bol en route. The boat departs from Bol at 0630 to arrive in Split at 0730, then leaves Split at 1600 to arrive in Bol at 1700. In addition, regular ferries run between the island’s main port, Supetar, and Split.
