This romantic little town is spectacularly located on a rocky plateau, at an altitude of 165 m.
“There is one town that would be better than Aranjuez to see your first bullfight in if you were only going to see one and that is Ronda. That is where you should go if you ever go to Spain on a honeymoon or if you ever bolt with anyone.” Ernest Hemingway, Death in the Afternoon.
The cradle of bullfighting as we know it, Ronda features high on the must-see list of many visitors to Andalucía because of its picturesque whitewashed streets and, most spectacularly, its position straddling a deep gorge that separates the old and new parts of town. The gorge is spanned by the Puente Nuevo, a late 18th-century bridge that crosses 80 m above the stream below. These attractions mean that it’s overrun with tourists in peak season; to really appreciate the town you should spend a night or two here, as most people come on day trips and by six in the evening the tour buses have rolled back to the coast. Pack a thick coat if you plan to visit in winter.
