Above the car park on top of the nearby cliff is the Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña (also known as El Compás), where a tiny image of the patron of Mijas may be found in a grotto, accompanied by numerous ex votos. Head for the Plaza de la Constitución, which leads to the cliffs and old walls. The church here is the Iglesia de la Concepción Inmaculada, built in the 17th century on the site of a Moorish mosque. Most of the church was built in Mozarabic style. While it was being re-roofed and renovated in 1992, some 17th-century wall paintings were discovered on the main pillars.
Donkey ‘taxis’ are popular in Mijas, and standard rates are €10 for a ride, or €15 to be pulled in a donkey cart.
