In Spain, the name Marbella conjures up a host of images. As the place where many of the country’s celebrities spend summer, it has glamorous connotations; Spain’s tabloid press relocates here in August to keep track of A-listers hanging out in the latest glitzy nightclub. But Spaniards always knew there was plenty of sleaze behind the diamanté façade – Jesús Gil y Gil, an infinitely corrupt man, was mayor here for years – yet chose to ignore it. The ongoing police investigation Operación Malaya has opened a stinking can of worms, centred around a cash-for-development approval scandal.
Nevertheless, Marbella is still by far the most appealing of the Costa del Sol towns, if you stay in its picturesque old city or on the beach below. Here, there are excellent places to stay and eat, and a lively atmosphere all year. West of the centre, however, a hideous strip of pleasure palaces, plastic surgery clinics, and Ferrari repair shops line the road to Puerto Banús, a luxury marina and hubristic exercise in the poorest of taste. Cracking summer nightlife yes – but it’s Spain’s ultimate triumph of style over substance and reeks of Eastern European mafias and local corruption.
