The self-styled ‘olive oil capital of the world’ is a busy provincial centre little visited by tourists. This fact alone, together with its lack of self-consciousness, can come as a distinct relief in high season. The narrow streets of its old town are dominated by the cathedral, which has some excellent Renaissance stonework and appears to have bulked up on steroids in an effort to upstage the castle, perched way up on a rocky hill overlooking the town, which is, of course, surrounded by a sea of olive groves. Although Jaén isn’t Andalucía’s most vibrant city, a day or two can happily be spent here taking in the restaurants and the sights, which include a delightful museum of naive art, in the same building as the city’s well-restored Arab baths.
