The main town in Huelva’s Sierra Morena, this handsome settlement has several interesting sights and enticing spots to stay. It’s the capital of a region dedicated to production of piggy products; add to this the abundance of locally foraged wild mushrooms and you have an intriguing eating scene to match. For much of the 13th century, this region was disputed by Castilla and Portugal; the castle overlooking the town is one of numerous examples. Aside from a few intriguing churches, many visitors head to the Gruta de las Maravillas, one of Spain’s most spectacular limestone caves.
There are 2 weekday buses from Huelva to Aracena, and 1 on Sat and Sun. The return buses leave Aracena very early except on Sun, when a day trip from Huelva is possible, leaving 0930 from Huelva and 1800 from Aracena. The trip takes 2 hrs and costs €7.40. There are 3 buses daily to and from Sevilla (1 hr 30 mins, €6); buses linking Sevilla and Lisboa also stop here. There are also 4 buses a day to Cortegana and Aroche (2 on Sun), and 2 to Alájar, Linares and Almonaster.
