The last town in Spain, Ayamonte looks at Portugal across the impressive mouth of the Río Guadiana. Cross-border tourism from the Algarve has boosted the economy in recent years, and there’s much charm to its pedestrianized historic centre despite its ugly outskirts. The town suffered when its once-important ferry to Portugal was rendered virtually redundant by the large motorway bridge a couple of kilometres upstream. However, cross-border shoppers and tourists, the expat property market, the marina and its fishing industry keep things ticking over.
