Nine kilometres southeast of Priego, the small village of Almedinilla boasts an excellent attraction, the Roman villa of El Ruedo. By the main road, the villa (957-703317, Wed-Sun 1030-1330, also Sat 1600-1900, €2.20) dates from the first century AD and has been beautifully excavated and cleverly presented. Mosaic floors and the remains of wall paintings are well preserved, and the various rooms, heating system, atrium and dining platform are clearly visible. Looking out over the fields and olive-speckled hills, you can imagine that the view from here hasn’t fundamentally changed over the last two millennia.
In the village’s centre, a small archaeological museum, with the same hours as the villa, displays some of the finds from the site, including a fine bronze of Hypnos, personification of sleep, in ‘talk-to-the-hand’ mode.
