Around 1 km beyond the Barrio de Santiago is the city’s zoo, with animals housed in a peaceful botanic garden. Although, as usual, you find yourself wishing the animals had more space, the organization does its best, and the creatures seem well cared for; there’s also a centre for treating sick and wounded animals found in the wild. All in all, it’s one of the country’s best. The big draw here is a rare white tiger, named Kyosu.
