The province of Alava is something of a wilderness compared to the densely settled valleys of Vizcaya and Guipúzcoa. It’s the place to come for unspoiled nature; there are some spots of great natural beauty and plenty of scope for hiking and other more specialized outdoor activities. The attractive walled town of Salvatierra is worth a visit and a base for exploring the area. The southern part of the province drops away to sunny plains, part of the Rioja wine region. Laguardia, the area’s main centre, is not to be missed.
