One of Spain’s larger cities, Zaragoza is the nicest of places, with an easy-going modern European feel allied to some attractive architecture and good eating options. Thousands of pilgrims come from all over Spain to visit the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, a massive construction that dominates the square of the same name. Zaragoza attracted even bigger crowds in 2008, when it hosted the World Expo, themed, appropriately for this thirsty province, on water conservation. Formerly an important Roman city, it’s now a prosperous centre that stands in stark contrast to the somewhat bleak province that it commands. It sits on the Ebro and was a port in that river’s livelier days. Over half of Aragón’s population lives in Zaragoza.
