Valladolid

Valladolid, the capital of the Castilla y León region, is not outstandingly beautiful but it is a pleasant city with a very significant history. It was the principal city of Spain for most of the early 16th century and its streets are redolent with the memories of important people who walked them and events that took place in them. These days it’s still an administrative centre, but a fairly relaxed and friendly one; perhaps it looks down the road to sprawling Madrid and breathes a small sigh of relief, as it must have been odds-on favourite to be named capital at one time. As the capital of Castilla y León, however, it still preserves an official function and has a somewhat pijo (posh) feel.
