Salamanca has a strong claim to being Spain’s most attractive city. A university town since the early 13th century, it reached its apogee in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Golden Age of Imperial Spain. The old town is a remarkable assembly of superb buildings; a day’s solid sightseeing can teach you more about Spanish architecture than you thought you ever wanted to know – Plateresque and Churrigueresque were more or less born here. By night, too, it’s a good spot; today’s university students just don’t seem to tuck up in bed with a candle, hot milk and a theological tract like they used to, and bar life is busy seven days a week, bolstered by the large numbers of tourists and foreign students learning Spanish. If you can handle the heat and the crowds, there are few better places in Spain to spend a summer evening than the superb Plaza Mayor; sit at an outdoor table and watch storks circle architectural perfection in the setting sun.
