Laredo

Part of the Hermandad de las Marismas (brotherhood of seatowns), Laredo was once an important port and the place whence Juana La Loca set sail in a fleet of 120 ships to her arranged marriage in Flanders; an ill-starred alliance that led to her complete mental breakdown. Her son Carlos V used the port too, to return to Spain weary and old, on his way to retirement and a peaceful death at the monastery of Yuste. In earlier times, Laredo was a big Roman seaport, named Portus Luliobrigensium, scene of a major naval engagement.
