Back on the mainland, Courtenay is the most prominent of three sister towns clustered within the farming landscape of the Comox Valley and, unpromising as its outskirts may be, must rank as Vancouver Island’s most attractive settlement after Victoria and Tofino. A clutch of decent shops, restaurants, cafés and galleries make this a more alluring base than Campbell River to the north, and it’s well placed for hiking the Forbidden Plateau section of Strathcona Park, skiing or mountain biking at Mount Washington or visiting Denman and Hornby islands. Since many of Vancouver Island’s places of interest are either close to Courtenay or further south, it’s worth taking the ferry from Courtenay to Powell River on the Sunshine Coast as part of a nice loop back to Vancouver . Outdoor lovers might even consider basing themselves here instead of Victoria.
