Local
Most of Jasper’s important trails are far removed from the town. For those with- out their own transport the choices are to hitchhike or use one of the rather expensive shuttle services: Jasper Adventure Centre, T780-852 5595; Walks and Talks Jasper, T780-852 4945. From May-Oct the Jasper Shuttle, T780-852 3370, www.jaspershuttle. com, connects the townsite with Maligne Lake, leaving 616 Patricia St at 0830, 1130, 1415, 1630, leaving the lake at 1000, 1300, 1515, 1800. One-way $16, $10.70 to Maligne Canyon. Will also drop you at trailheads.
Long distance Greyhound, T1800- 661 8747, runs 4 daily buses to Edmonton (5 hrs, $58), 2 to Vancouver (11-12 hrs, $117) via Kamloops (5½ hrs, $61) and 1 to Prince George (5½ hrs, $62). Sun Dog Tours, T1888-786 3641, www.sundogtours. com, runs a shuttle to Banff ($59) and Calgary ($105).
Train
VIA Rail, T1888-842 7245, http://www.viarail.ca, operates 3 trains per week to Edmonton (5 hrs, from $112) and Vancouver (17½ hrs, from $155) or to Prince Rupert (31 hrs, from $107) with a night in Prince George (6½ hrs, from $50).
