Pemberton sits in a valley surrounded by tall karri, jarrah and marri trees and national parks. Like most of the timber towns it grew up around a timber mill and the town is full of identical wooden workers’ cottages that lend Pemberton a quaint toy-town feel. The mill still operates, although it is on reduced hours and many workers have lost their jobs. It is likely to close in the next few years and the town is slowly shifting its focus towards tourism and other ventures. Pemberton is central to an emerging wine region, a couple of superb woodcraft galleries and some wonderfully scenic bushwalking and driving country amid the soaring forests.
