Sitting on Koombana Bay, at the northern end of the beautiful sweep of Geographe Bay, is Bunbury, the major port for the southwest. It is far from a natural harbour though, as the original shape of the coastline has been dramatically altered by cutting a channel through the Leschenault Peninsula to the sea and by the construction of boating and shipping harbours. Major exports include mineral sands, alumina and woodchips and, until recently, industry has come first in Bunbury and has been allowed to dominate the coastline. However, in the last few years grain silos have been demolished and train yards moved to create a far more attractive foreshore. There are also plans to develop a boardwalk on the bay lined with cafés and apartments. The city’s greatest natural attraction is its resident population of dolphins who live in Koombana Bay and swim in to the beach regularly. Bunbury also has a sophisticated ‘cappuccino strip’ along Victoria Street, good shopping and beautiful ocean beaches on Geographe Bay. It’s an appealing and relaxed place with the services of a large city and the slow, sunny pace of a small seaside town.
