Albany has a small city centre making it a relaxed and friendly place and many enjoy the mild climate (Albany is often 10°C cooler than Perth in summer). There are great national parks in every direction but Torndirrup National Park is the closest and has some impressive granite rock formations, cliffs and a range of magical ocean beaches. The main activity in winter is whale watching, and, perhaps strangely, one of Albany’s busiest attractions is the whaling station where the giants were chopped up as recently as 1978.
