Exmouth sits on the eastern side of the North West Cape, facing the calm waters of the Exmouth Gulf and seperated by the low hills of Cape Range from the pristine beaches of the Ningaloo Marine Park. Despite the marine riches of the cape, the town doesn’t have a coastal feel. It’s a practical place that was built to service the local military bases and to withstand the seasonal cyclones of this region. A self-sufficient community of American naval staff lived on the Harold E Holt Naval Communications station from 1967 until 1992 when the Australian Navy took over management of the base. Thirteen VLF towers dominate the northern tip of the cape and are taller than the Eiffel Tower. Until recently some buildings at the station were used for tourism ventures but after the 11 September terrorist attacks security has been tightened and the base is effectively closed for the present.
