Portree is Skye’s capital and, as such, is a functional kind of place with all the attendant facilities and services you’d expect to find in the island’s main settlement. That said, it’s fairly attractive; a busy fishing port built around a natural harbour, with a row of brightly painted houses along the shorefront and the rest of the town rising steeply up to the central Somerled Square, the centre of which is now dominated by a public car park (pay and display).
